Grow Food Poem

Next week I am teaching my first graders about Living and Non-living things.  One of the books I plan on reading is by our author of the month, Lois Ehlert, Growing Vegetable Soup.

I found the perfect poem in the poetry book, Pick A Poem, by Helen Moore,

Grow Food.

I typed up a copy of the poem for my poetry basket and a black and white copy for the student poetry books.

I created a homework page for the students

AND  I made this fun spelling word coloring page.

Fall Leaves Poem

Sorry I am not blogging much lately.  I am a bit overwhelmed at school.  Lots going on with a new grade, new expectations and learning new things.  I just don’t seem to have time to write it all down.  Thank goodness for TPT.  I have spent my last two paychecks there trying to find things to keep my active first graders involved in meaningful activities.  I love my purchases and the kids do too.

Anyways,  I have my new poem prepared for next week.  It is starting to get cooler here so we are going to do Fall Leaves.

We are also working on the short vowel sounds so I want to constantly review.   I have three things included in this freebie, a colorful poem for your Poetry basket, a black and white copy for your student Poetry Notebooks and a homework page.

Five For Friday -- Sept. 13

I am starting to feel like I know what I am doing and where I am going.  I just finished my third week of first grade again and I feel like I am starting to learn my rhythm of the day.  There are some things I definitely need to improve but for this week I will celebrate what I did do right.

1.  I just love the photo book I made with all the pictures of my classes throughout the years.  This book is so precious to me I almost do not want to share it with the children.  However, then I recall why I made it and I let go and let them enjoy the book  

2.  A couple of weeks ago I found this Ideal on Kacey's blog about introducing the spelling words through a bingo activity.  I thought about it all night and then threw it together last minute.   My kids absolutely love it.  They still have not figured out they all have the same card.

3.  We read the story, The Dot and then painted Dots and ate some dots for snack.  

4.  I finally organized a binder to keep love notes and pictures from the children in.

5.  Finally I organized two art cases for indoor recess.  Last year my students loved to do art 

work during indoor recess, especially bookmaking.  I thought I would add to the fun.  

A Memory Book for My School Pictures

My Little Red Book Of Memories

I have been teaching for so long and I have so many memories.  One of my favorite things to do and display each year are my picture frames of all my class pictures.  My students love looking for their brothers and sisters, their babysitters and their reading buddies.  It was never a problem before because I had this wonderful extra space to display all of the frames.

 

Well my twenty some picture frames are just not working in my new classroom.  Every time I try to open a window or display a book or set something on the counter I have to stack up the photos or throw them in a bin. 

So I decided to display them in a new way so that the children can still look at them when they want. 

I moved them from their cute picture frames into a photo book.  

Now I can sit down down on a cozy chair with a cup of tea and look through my book and ENJOY.  

I Can Read Poem

It has been such a busy first two weeks of school however I am loving first grade.  I have a wonderful, yet challenging group of children.  I know this is going to be a great year.  I have children at a lot of different levels in my class so I will be planning lots of small group activities.  

However one activity that I can make work at any level is poetry.  Here is my poem for the week.  We will do several activities with the poem above after we add it to our poetry books:

1.  Look for our sight words of the week.
2.  Look for punctuation.
3.  Find short vowel words.
4.  Look for words that rhyme.  
5.  Add pictures of our favorite ice cream.  

Then the children take home this copy for homework to share with their families.
