Freebie Friday: Poem Winter, Spring, Summer, Fall

I have one last poem to share with you.  It is about the seasons.  I did already teach the season in the middle of the school year in social studies and we did make a cute poem book.  The poem book was called Changes in the Year.  I did post about it here.  

However the seasons came back in our Science book during the weather unit.  So I found another poem for the poetry book.  

Now we did this poem towards the end of the year to there is more to read and more skills involved.

The children added the poem to their poetry notebooks.  The poetry notebooks were a hit at the end of the year when they realized they finally get to take them home. 

My Teddy Bear Poetry on Freebie Friday

The last two weeks of school I have my students read the story Ira Sleeps Over.  It is a cute little story about a little boy who has to decide if he wants to take his Teddy Bear to a sleep over with his friend Reggie.  He seeks advice from his parents and his sister.  Needless to say, he is conflicted about what to do.  We had some great discussions in class. 

During this week I have the students read the poem:  My Teddy Bear  by Margaret Hillert.  I found it in a great poetry book: Read Aloud Poems  By:  Jack Prelutsky.  

This is one of the last poems we do in first grade so I use it as an assessment.  I have the students use their detective skills to find short and long vowel words.  I warn them ahead of time…..there may not be an answer for each box you have to think about it carefully.

Friday Freebie -- The Water Cycle

Switching to First Grade this year challenged me in so many ways.  For the first time in a long time I was looking for new material each week in more than one subject.  One topic I taught for the first time was the Water Cycle.  This book about the Water Cycle was basic and had great photos.  It was easy for my first graders to understand.

Of course Brain Pop Jr. came through for me and had something wonderful to show the children.  I can not believe how much my students LOVE Brain Pop Jr.

Another great resource I found was from Kristen Smith and her blog A Day in First Grade.  She created this wonderful Weather Packet.  My students loved the activities.

I found a great poem about the water cycle in my favorite poetry book by Helen Moore.  We added this to our poetry collection.

I created a follow up worksheet for it as well.

This week I am sharing a poem I did with my students the last week of First Grade. 

It is from the book, You Read to Me, I'll Read to You.

I am trying to buy the additional copies of the book every change I get.  I think I have 6 copies now.

I introduced the poem to the children on Monday.  They LOVED it.  They colored the mice and added it to their poetry notebooks.  Later I read more poems from the book as well.  That is all I needed to do and they were off reading for the week.  There are several other books similar to this as well.  I showed the first graders where they could find the basket with the poem books.    

This was a favorite among the boys.

They enjoyed buddy reading with their friends all week.  They just loved the books. I don't think I had to remind anyone to read.  They were all buddy reading!  Amazing! 

Monkey Business

This week in first grade we are going to have a little monkey business going on during our reading time.  We are reinforcing our reading skills using the book, Caps for Sale.

As we were making text to text connections, my first graders came up with a list of other monkey books that they have read or would recommend to their friends:

I found a wonderful poem about a monkey in the book Pick A Poem.

  ( My favorite poetry book this year.) 

 The title of the poem is, Monkey's Meal. 

 I typed up the poem for the children's poetry notebook and made a follow up worksheet.

This Week in First Grade April 21

In first grade this week we will begin our new science unit about weather.  There are several lessons in the book that I will be doing however in addition to the text book I found a wonderful unit by Kristen Smith.  There are some amazing ideas in the unit that I can not wait to share with my class.

I found a poem about a rainbow this week.

The week before vacation, we made Adjective Rainbows.  It was an idea I saw on Pinterest.  It went perfect with our Religion lesson on The Golden Rule.  How should we treat others.......the same way we want others to treat us.  We brainstormed a list of positive adjectives....

Then the children thought of kind adjectives to describe their friends.   We picked names out of a basket to fill out the strips.  The group of children met together and discussed what were the best adjectives to put on the rainbow and surprise the special person on the cloud.   It was such a treat to find out what kind things the other children thought about each student.  It was the highlight of the day.  The first graders loved this activity.  This is something I will do again next year.

I found three great books to read about clouds to the students as well.

Flat Stanley

This week my class is reading Flat Stanley.  Flat Stanley is a tradition in first grade at the school that I teach at.  So I am making an effort to make this work with my first graders as well.    I found this poem about children around the world and I thought it would be perfect for this week.

I know Flat Stanley travels to California but this poem is so cute.  Here is a lucky bonus for me as well,  we are learning about recycling in science.

Hello  Happy Spring

I have so much to share but no time to edit and type up what I am doing.  There just is not enough time in the day for all the things I want to do in life.  However I am trying hard to make sure I share at least two or three things a week.

Here is my weekly freebie,  this week we are learning map skills and long o sound.  This is the poem we picked for first grade.  I have been working so hard on reading strategies in my reading classes it is starting to pay off.

Each week the students take home a copy of the poem and review the skills we are practicing in class with a poem worksheet.
