Another Turkey Poem

This week I am sharing a poem with you that my new grade partner shared with me, Albuquerque Turkey.

I introduced it to my students today and they loved it.  They thought the name was very funny.  Each group who game up to guided reading with the poem enjoyed every little bit of the word searches.

ClickHere is you would like a free copy for your students. You actually get three things:  a student black and white copy for a poetry book, a color copy for your poetry basket and a homework page to practice phonics skills.

Thanksgiving Cards

Happy Thanksgiving
Last week in my first grade class we were very busy creating cards.  We to created two Thanksgiving cards for the church bulletin.  It was a fun and easy card.  The kids drew a tree, turkeys and pumpkins and then we added leaves with a q-tip and paint.

Then as part of our service project we created two cards to send to the elderly in our church community.  On the first day of the project we glued tissue paper onto a small paper plate.

Then the next day we cut the plate in half and assembled our turkeys.  Suggestion if you decide to do this project, the eyes I picked for the turkeys is too small.  They would look cuter with bigger eyes.

Community Map

I have not been the best blogger this year.  However I feel I have one month to redeem myself.  Last week in Social Studies we were learning about our neighborhood and community.

We created a large map of our neighborhood.  As you can tell from the map, most of the children in my class live in walking distance of the school.  I do have a couple of students that ride to school in a car because they live a few miles away.  That is why our map is spread out.

My favorite part of the map is the liquor store.  The kids informed me you can buy pretzels and candy there and sometimes beer and root beer for the football games.

Five Fat Turkeys

This week we are reading a turkey poem.  We are learning about the Pilgrims in Social Studies so I thought a turkey poem would be fun.

I introduced the poem in class today and the kids loved it.  They loved the rhyming words throughout the poem.   Tonight the children will do the homework poem sheet.

I also read the book, The Great Turkey Race.  My class laughed so much throughout this story.  I made a quick story sequence sheet for it.  It was a nice activity for daily 5.

Our Thankful Tree

Switching to a new grade presents so many new challenges.  It is a huge undertaking each week when I open my teaching binders and they are completely empty.  Thank goodness for Pinterest.  I find so many cute ideas to help me each week.  TPT is another great resource, unfortunately I can not spend my whole paycheck there.

The Thankful tree is an idea I found on Pinterest and it was perfect.  I incorporated the Thankful tree into my Religion lesson for the week.  We are learning about Thanking God for the gift of creation.  My first graders wrote on each leaf things in God's creation that they were thankful for.  We had lots of create responses:  families, food, trees, flowers, puppies, birds, fish, teachers, friends and my favorite bats.
